The importance of stretching down long and low and lengthening the topline

by chris hiller on 03/26/10

The first aim in basic training has been acheived if the horse knows and accepts driving aids, follows soft stopping aids and shows willingness to stretch at all times.  That doesn't sound like much..but it is a huge step in the right direction.  Let the horse take the rein all the way up to the buckle and you will receive important information about the value of your previous work. To many people skip this stage.  I have seen horses competing at the upper levels who cannot stretch down in the bridle and they wonder why the horse cannot use his back.  It is worth the time to fully understand this important stage out.
